“That’s why you know all of those famous people,” I say as Mark and I walk down the street. “Because of Gran and your grandpa?”

His hands are in his pockets, and I wonder if that is to keep from me grabbing hold.

“They knew a lot of people,” he says in that charming way that says, Yes, I know a lot of famous and rich people, but that keeps the, I’m a normal man who writes biographies and gave up my cat, sort of tone.

“I can’t believe she could keep all of this from me.”

“She did what your mother asked. But if I’m honest about it, I think she liked it. I think she liked stepping away from all the limelight. She never was one to be changed by it.”

“Really? My grandmother owns a seven-million-dollar house. I know she’s had her share of lovers and moved around. You don’t think she was changed by it?”

Mark chuckled. “But that came with who she was anyway, not her stature. The names of the men were just more notable because of who she knew.”

“Are you saying my grandmother was just a slut?”

The word hurt to say, but Mark grinned at it. “No. I’m saying she was a forward-thinking woman. And I think women who are confident in themselves and enjoy the pleasure of men are incredible.”

“I’m not sure how I’m taking that.”

“I mean, since the beginning of time, men who have multiple partners are studs. Women have always been looked down on for it. It’s crap. Sure, I believe in relationships. I believe in marriage even though my parents didn’t. I believe in a steady home, whether it be in Palm Beach or Denver. Your grandmother did nothing wrong. She accepted herself and was confident.”

“Well that sounds better the way that you say it than what I think.”

“Am I to believe that she raised you to be closed off to all of that?”

“You didn’t know Betsy as Gran, remember.”

“Not in the same way you did. You have to remember, she was sleeping with my grandfather when I met her.”

“Oh-my-god!” I can’t help but sound childish. It was a horrible thought.

Mark laughs from deep within now. “What did she have to say about sex to you?”

“I don’t want to have this conversation on some street corner in Atlanta.”

“Here. There. What does it matter?”

There’s a bench in front of the candy store, and I have to sit down. This is how it’s going to be, isn’t it? One thing will lead to another. We will each get the parts of this journey when they are presented.

He will learn about Gran. I will learn about Betsy.

This, well, this wasn’t what I thought I’d learn today.

Mark sits next to me. I run my hands down my thighs, and he takes advantage of the movement to take my right hand and thread his fingers with mine.

“She didn’t like my high school boyfriend, so to say she kept me close would be an understatement.” I look at our joined hands and ease against the back of the bench.
